It seems that Christmas comes earlier each year and that is perfectly ok with me. The Designing Pickers’ Booth at Black Dog Salvage is all decked out for the holidays. Stop by and check out our Christmas Ornaments and gift ideas. Yesterday I had a little help from my two sweet little granddaughters at the Holiday Open House.

After the recent Spring snow we had this weekend, I am so ready for Spring. Spring brings some of my favorite things…yard sales, flipflops, and longer days.
We updated our booth at Black Dog Salvage with more bright vibrant colors for Spring. Below is a preview of some of the one of a kind items we have available:
It has been a while since I have written a blog post and I really need to get better at this but this summer has been crazy busy. We have moved the booth 3 times, to new bigger, more visible locations at Black Dog Salvage. It has been amazing at how great business has been during out first year of business. We have a hard time keeping the booth stocked because things are going out as fast as we move them in, but that is a good thing.
This has been a busy week. I have painted the booth a great color called Ocean Storm. It works well to show up our Fall and Winter merchandise we have planned for the booth. I have found a new way to “pick” from my home by searching online auctions. My friend, Tommy Wagner has one of the best sites around. Check out Tommy Wagner Auctions for lots of great stuff. I purchased some great decorating accessories this week from his latest auction. I have been doing a lot of picking this week and have found some really cool items for painting. Now to just find the time to paint…that is the real problem because our staging business has been busier this year than ever.
We have used this small side table for several years in our staging business but after lots of moving, it had a few scratches on top and was ready to be retired. Instead I painted it with Annie Sloan’s Providence, distressed the edges and now it has a fresh new look in another staged home.
We put it in the Designing Pickers booth at Black Dog Salvage last month but it did not sell so it went back to the warehouse.
It now provides a much needed pop of color in one of the Shows Great Staged Homes for sale but it will be for sale soon…so watch for it at Designing Pickers.
We had a busy day at the booth last weekend and we sold just about everything in the booth. Yesterday we added new merchandise including this really sweet farm table and 4 chairs. The table can be sold with or without the chairs.
A few weeks ago while photographing in Rustburg, I picked up a really cool chair, which although it was looking a bit worn and outdated, it was in great shape. The cushion was in good condition and after a thorough cleaning I decided to just leave the pink velvet and work around it with a silver paint application. I used Valspar Metallic paint and was very happy with the outcome although it took several applications to cover.
We will be adding the chair to our booth today.
This past weekend when we were picking up the 1943 Family Circle magazine that I purchased from an online auction, I spotted two vintage suitcases that were in great condition. We will be adding these to the Designing Picker’s booth at Black Dog Salvage on Monday, March 12th.
Vintage suitcase projects have become all the rage. Pinterest is full of ideas and photos of cool upcycling projects using these vintage suitcases. Below are just a few suggestions
Looks like we might finally get some snow this winter and I am not worried about milk and eggs. I am worried that I won’t have enough paint for my snow day projects so I am heading out this morning to find paint and supplies to keep me busy if I am snowed in for a few days.
Below are just a few of the projects planned for my snow days:
I found this coffee table this week as I was photographing in Rustburg and stopped by one of my favorite little thrift stores, the Route 29 Flea Market. The price was good and I liked the straight lines. I thought it would be a great upcycle project. The only problem is I can’t decide what color. The silver tips on the legs give it a contemporary style and feel, so Shabby Chic is not going to work. I would love to hear your suggestions.
I also found this great chair and although the seat has a few stains, it is in great shape. I can’t wait to get started on this project.
I also have a chest and night stand waiting for paint, so bring on the snow… I am ready! Watch for before and after pictures of these projects to be posted as they are completed.
We have added a couple new pieces to our booth. Check out the beautiful black and white chest with the little storage compartments in the top drawer.
Having trouble seeing your watch? Always running a little late? The we have just the thing for you…Large commercial clock.
Stop by Black Dog Salvage on Saturday, warm yourself by the wood burning fire, pet Sally the dog, and check out Designing Pickers.
We have all had them or seen them in thrift stores…those shiny brass lamps. Why not give those old brass lamps a new life? Another great way to “upcycle” while living green.
A few months ago I found a brass lamp in a local Goodwill Store. I liked the shape of it and although it had a small dent, at $5.00, I could not turn it down. I started my lamp makeover with a good cleaning, then I sprayed a coat of primer, followed by a light blue color, and a final coat of spray clear poly. I added a white shade that I had on hand and the result can be seen below.
